Markiyan Kliuchkovskyi is a Partner of International Arbitration and Cross-Border Litigation Practice and a Head of Sports Law Practice. Mr. Kliuchkovskyi has over 10 years of legal practice experience, representing clients in energy disputes, commercial and investment arbitration, transnational litigation, mediation & negotiations, and sports law cases. Since joining the Firm in 2004, his practice has encompassed client representation at all stages of proceedings both in court and before arbitral tribunals. His experience includes handling arbitrations held at many major arbitration institutions, including the LCIA, SCC, ICC, ICSID, CAS, and AAA, as well as before ad hoc tribunals.

Mr Kliuchkovskyi regularly represents the interests of Ukraine in various international disputes, as well as of the panel of his clients, which include, among others, DCH, FC Metalist, Bunge, Advent, Altimo and Hochtief. He has also served as an arbitrator to adjudicate commercial disputes. He has experience in enforcing foreign court decisions and arbitration awards in Ukraine, and in representing sports clubs and players before various courts and tribunals.

Over the years he has participated in more than 30 cases, including:

  • Successfully representing Ukraine in an unprecedented case against Norsk Hydro on setting aside of a USD 20 million arbitration award issued against Ukraine in Swedish courts;
  • Representing Ukraine in a series of ICSID cases brought against it by Global Trading Resources Corp. / Globex International and Bosh International Inc. and B&P, resulting in dismissal of claims against Ukraine;
  • Representing Ukraine in an SCC arbitration over the first-ever PSA in Ukraine against Vanco Prykerchenska Ltd.;
  • Representing the Ukrainian state-owned NJSC "Naftogaz of Ukraine" in a series of cases (aggregate amount of claims exceeding USD 8 billion) arising out of contracts for gas supply, transit and storage at the Arbitration Institute of the Stockholm Chamber of Commerce;
  • Representing a party to a corporate dispute over a large Ukrainian mobile communications operator in numerous jurisdictions;
  • Representing a Ukrainian football club in an unprecedented case concerning allegations of match-fixing before the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).            

Mr Kliuchkovskyi holds a degree (summa cum laude) of a Master of International Law from the Institute of International Relations of Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv. Markiyan has earned his LL.M. degree in international dispute resolution (summa cum laude) from Pittsburgh University Law School.
