Business discussion: “Sanctions and retaliation: how best to protect business?”

On 29 January 2015, the Council of the European Union voted to extend the economic sanctions introduced in March 2014. For sanctions imposed on a number of individuals and legal entities, the term has been extended to September 2015; EU sectoral sanctions will remain in effect until 31 July 2015. In addition, the raft of sanctions introduced by the USA continues to be enforced. As a retaliatory measure, the decree “On the implementation of special economic measures to ensure the security of the Russian Federation” was signed on 6 August 2014. The introduction of sanctions and retaliatory measures has pressed upon entrepreneurs the need to assess the attendant risks for business and develop safeguarding procedures. A year after they were first enacted, we are proposing a discussion on the experience of working under these sanctions.

The business discussion will take place on 5 March 2015 (Thursday), from 10:00 to 12:30, at the Firm’s St. Petersburg office (24 Nevsky Prospekt, 4th floor).

Participants in the business discussion will consider:

  • The nature and peculiarities of sectoral sanctions
  • Additional measures taken by individual countries to restrict cooperation with Russia and how they are implemented
  • Is it possible to bypass the restrictions on trade through a third-party state?
  • Protective clauses for international trade contracts and effective implementation
  • Initial results of contesting sanctions within state entities
